Project Planum showcases the upholstery knit and its colours that is applied in several projects by Raw Color.

This website presents four projects that are developed by the studio, all united by the use of Planum. The colour design process of Planum, the interactive installation Chroma Columns, the handcrafted Quarantine Quilts and the refined wall pieces Field Frames.

Project 1

Planum

Planum is a knitted upholstery textile with a refined expression and a smooth, soft surface. Characterised by a subtle matt lustre and a natural, dry handle, the knitted textile is constructed using a simple double-knit with a predominantly woollen surface.

‘We decided to develop the colour palette based on hand-painted swatches. This enabled us to create shades that are less expected and uncommon.’

Project 2

Chroma Columns

To highlight the importance of colour, as part of a fabrics character, this kinetic installation generates ever changing colour combinations.

‘Our aim was to combine the soft character of the knit with mechanical engines and electronics to allow an interactive encounter with the textile. ‘

Project 3

Quarantine Quilts

Different colours of the versatile Planum palette feature in various combinations and proportions giving each quilt its own characteristic.

‘We wanted to challenge ourselves to work with limited resources and handcraft. The confinement led to a mindset that is reflected in the way the quilts are constructed.‘

Project 4

Field Frames

Every frame in the collection contains another composition of coloured textiles stretched over surfaces in different proportions.

‘Field Frames allowed us to reuse the smallest residues of Planum that have been remains of the previous projects Chroma Columns and Quarantine Quilts.’

Live Presentation

For those who want to gain a deeper understanding, the studio created an online live presentation, in which they will throw light on the importance of colour, its materialisation and the proces behind Project Planum. Without traveling the world, you will get an interactive experience, diving into the diverse qualities of colour applied knit. Next to that, the meetings offer a glimpse on how tactility might be presented in online spaces. The live presentation can be booked on demand. Please send us a mail for requests.
